How much AI demand is in the job market?

Indeed's job postings index stood at 101.8 on August 14, 2026, down 2.9 percent from a year earlier. Postings mentioning AI reached 6.3 percent of all US postings, against a prior peak of 3.3 percent in 2022. Lightcast data analyzed by the Bipartisan Policy Center put postings requiring AI skills up 165 percent year over year, with staffing agencies among the fastest growing demand industries. CompTIA counts more than 320,000 active postings requiring AI skills, most in titles outside the tech sector.

One caution belongs next to every one of those figures: postings are not employment. Computer systems design and related services, the industry that employs most software developers, had 2,362,700 employees in August 2026, down 900 from July. Robert Half's 2027 Salary Guide reports 92 percent of technology leaders paying more for AI skills and 65 percent offering above their planned range; its 2026 guide put the placement midpoint for an AI and machine learning engineer at $170,750. Where are the shortages?

The 2026 State of the CIO survey ranks AI and machine learning tied with cybersecurity as the hardest IT roles to fill; hybrid roles combining AI engineering with business fluency stay open six to nine months. CBRE puts the North American AI skilled workforce at 751,000, up 45 percent in a year, with the Bay Area, New York, Seattle and Washington DC holding 37 percent of US AI specialty talent; Austin and Dallas Fort Worth are the only Sun Belt metros in its top ten, and Brookings lists Detroit, Pittsburgh and Nashville as emerging centers. Data center geography is the inverse: Indeed's fastest growing data center hiring metros are Hermiston, Oregon; Columbus; Jackson, Mississippi; and Reno.

Is AI causing layoffs?

Less than the headlines say. Challenger, Gray and Christmas counted 52,881 announced job cuts in August 2026. The one place the data show displacement is entry level office work: Stanford's Digital Economy Lab finds employment of workers aged 22 to 25 in the most AI exposed occupations about 19 percent below trend through June 2026, while workers 26 and older show no gap.
