What is happening in US manufacturing engineering in 2026, in plain English, and what it means for the person trying to staff a launch.

Activity is up and hiring is not keeping pace. The ISM Manufacturing PMI read 54.6 in August 2026, the eighth straight month of expansion, with production at 58.3 and new orders at 53.7. Yet manufacturing payrolls were 12,638,000 in August, up only 23,000 over twelve months, and production workers averaged a 40.5 hour week with 3.1 hours of overtime. Plants are running the people they have harder. Job openings tell the rest of the story: manufacturers posted 580,000 openings in July 2026 against 428,000 a year earlier, a 36 percent jump, and durable goods openings alone rose 76,000 in a single month. Across the whole economy there were 0.95 unemployed people for every opening, so an engineer who leaves is rarely replaced from the unemployment line.

The engineer shortage is a manufacturing engineer shortage. BLS does not track manufacturing engineers as a separate occupation. Most of them sit inside industrial engineers, which BLS projects to grow 12 percent from 2025 to 2035 with about 23,100 openings a year on a base of 365,100 jobs, and electrical and electronics engineers, projected up 8 percent with about 16,300 openings a year. Those are healthy numbers for a profession, and they understate the problem on a plant floor, because the openings concentrate in launches, retools and automation projects that all want the same person in the same quarter. The Aerospace Industries Association and McKinsey found industry attrition near 15 percent in 2024 and named engineering and skilled trades the two hardest categories to fill. The Federal Reserve's September 2026 Beige Book put it in one sentence: "Skilled trades and technical workers were difficult to find."

Automation is creating engineering work, not removing it. US factories installed about 38,000 industrial robots in 2025, up 11 percent and the third strongest year on record, and the United States still sits eighth in the world at 307 robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers, so the installation wave has a long way to run. Every one of those cells needs a controls engineer to integrate it, a manufacturing engineer to own the process and technicians to keep it running. BLS now says so directly: automated machinery "is expected to create jobs" for industrial machinery mechanics, projected up 14 percent with about 51,900 openings a year. Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute counted nearly 500,000 open manufacturing technician positions in September 2026 and expect 2.3 million technician openings to fill between 2025 and 2030, with technician employment growing six times faster than production employment.

The skills question is the question. In Deloitte's 2026 Manufacturing Industry Outlook, more than a third of 600 executives named equipping workers with the needed skills as their top concern for smart manufacturing, and the same study expects more than 81 percent of task hours to remain human. On the hiring side, iCIMS measured a 49 day median time to fill in manufacturing in August 2026, with openings running 29 percent above baseline while hires ran 6 percent below. Small manufacturers feel it most: 47 percent of NFIB member owners reported few or no qualified applicants in August, and 31 percent had openings for skilled workers they could not fill.

What it means for a plant manager or HR lead. An engineering requisition opened the week a launch is approved will still be open when the equipment arrives unless someone is working it every day. The candidate you want is employed, is not reading job boards and will take the first credible offer that reaches them, which is why a recruiter with an existing network fills the seat and a posting does not. Budget matters too: a contract engineer at a fixed rate for the program term is easier to approve than a permanent requisition in a year when headcount is frozen, and it converts to direct hire when the volume is proven. Start the search before the purchase order for the equipment, not after.

01 / Manufacturing engineer

Manufacturing and process engineers

  • Does: owns a process or a line from launch through steady state. Writes work instructions, sets cycle time, runs PFMEA and control plans, drives scrap and downtime down, and is the first call when the line stops.
  • Credentials and skills: BS in mechanical, industrial or manufacturing engineering, or an equivalent record on the floor. Lean and Six Sigma (Green or Black Belt), APQP and PPAP in automotive, AS9100 exposure in aerospace, GD&T print reading, CAD (SolidWorks, NX or CATIA), time studies, SPC and Minitab.
  • We screen for: a launch they can walk us through step by step, the OEM or supplier environments they have worked in, and whether they want to be on the floor or in the office.

02 / Quality engineer

Quality and supplier quality engineers

  • Does: owns the quality system for a part family or a supplier base. Runs PPAP submissions and first article inspection, leads 8D and root cause on customer complaints, manages gauge R&R and MSA, and represents the plant in customer and registrar audits.
  • Credentials and skills: ASQ CQE or CQA, IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 internal auditor training, AS9100 and AS9102 in aerospace, FMEA, SPC, GD&T, CMM familiarity, customer portal experience with the major automotive OEMs and defense primes.
  • We screen for: an 8D they closed for good, a PPAP or FAI package they built from scratch, and how they handle a customer who is on the phone about a hold.
  • Schedule: days, with travel to suppliers for supplier quality roles.
03 / Controls engineer

Controls and electrical engineers

  • Does: designs, programs and commissions the control systems that run the equipment. PLC and HMI programming, safety circuits, drives, industrial networks and the integration of robots, vision and conveyors into one cell.
  • Credentials and skills: Rockwell (Studio 5000, FactoryTalk), Siemens (TIA Portal), Beckhoff or Mitsubishi, Ethernet/IP and Profinet, safety PLCs and risk assessment to ISO 13849, VFD setup, electrical schematics in AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN, NFPA 79 and 70E awareness.
  • We screen for: which platforms they have programmed from a blank project, a commissioning they led at a customer site, and whether they can explain a fault they chased for two days.
  • Schedule: days at design time, nights and weekends at commissioning. Contract for launches, direct for plant controls seats.
04 / Automation and robotics

Automation and robotics engineers

  • Does: specifies, simulates and deploys automated cells. Robot programming and offline simulation, end of arm tooling, machine vision setup, cycle time studies, integrator management and acceptance testing at the vendor and at the plant.
  • Credentials and skills: Fanuc, ABB, KUKA or Yaskawa programming, RoboGuide or Process Simulate, Cognex or Keyence vision, robot safety standards (ANSI/RIA R15.06), mechanical design in SolidWorks or NX, PLC handshake logic.
  • We screen for: cells they took from concept to production, how they handled the integrator who fell behind, and their comfort with both the robot pendant and the project plan.
  • Schedule: days, with runoff and installation weeks that run long. Direct or contract.
05 / Industrial engineer

Industrial and continuous improvement engineers

  • Does: designs the flow of the plant. Line balancing, layout, labor standards, ergonomics, value stream maps, kaizen events, capacity planning and the business case for the next piece of equipment.
  • Credentials and skills: BS in industrial engineering, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, time and motion study, simulation tools, AutoCAD layout work, MES and ERP data pulls, plus the facilitation skill to run a kaizen with hourly operators in the room.
  • We screen for: a project with a measured result they can defend, how they worked with a supervisor who did not want to change, and whether they can read a P&L as well as a layout.
  • Schedule: days. Mostly direct placement.
06 / Design engineer

Mechanical design engineers and CAD designers

  • Does: designs the product, the fixture or the tool. Concept through detail drawings, tolerance stacks, DFM reviews with manufacturing, prototype builds and engineering change management.
  • Credentials and skills: SolidWorks, NX, CATIA or Creo, GD&T to ASME Y14.5, FEA basics, sheet metal and machining design rules, PLM systems such as Teamcenter or Windchill, EIT or PE for roles that sign drawings.
  • We screen for: a portfolio they can talk through, how they responded when manufacturing said the part could not be made, and whether they have designed for the process your plant runs.
  • Schedule: days, office based with plant visits. Direct or contract for a program.
07 / Technicians

Controls, robotics and automation technicians

  • Does: keeps the automation running on every shift. PLC fault finding, robot recovery and touch up, servo and drive replacement, vision system adjustments, preventive maintenance on cells and the first line of defense when a fault code appears at 2 a.m.
  • Credentials and skills: associate degree or military electronics training, Fanuc or ABB operator and maintenance courses, PLC troubleshooting on Rockwell or Siemens, electrical safety and lockout tagout, mechanical skills with pneumatics, hydraulics and conveyors.
  • We screen for: a fault they diagnosed without calling the integrator, comfort on the shift you actually need to cover, and the judgment to know when to escalate.
  • Schedule: all shifts, weekends and rotating. Temp to hire, contract or direct.
08 / Leadership

Engineering, launch and plant engineering managers

  • Does: owns the engineering budget, the program timeline and the team. Customer facing on launches, accountable for capital projects, and the person who decides which problems the engineers work on this week.
  • Credentials and skills: engineering degree, ten or more years in plants, program management (PMP is a plus), capital justification, supplier and integrator negotiation, a record of developing engineers rather than just supervising them.

Manufacturing jobs to refill from retirements alone, 2024 to 2033

Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute project a net need for 3.8 million new manufacturing employees between 2024 and 2033, 2.8 million of them to replace retirees, with as many as 1.9 million going unfilled. Engineering departments feel it first because the retiring engineer carries twenty years of tribal knowledge about the line. The aerospace and defense sector reported attrition near 15 percent in 2024 and named engineering the hardest category to fill.

More than a third of 600 executives in Deloitte's 2026 outlook cite equipping workers with the right skills as their top concern. The work changed faster than the titles: a "maintenance technician" posting in 2026 needs PLC fault finding and robot recovery, and a "manufacturing engineer" needs vision systems and simulation. Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute count nearly 500,000 open technician positions right now. A resume keyword match cannot tell a Studio 5000 programmer from someone who sat near one.

Openings jumped from 428,000 to 580,000 while manufacturing headcount grew just 23,000 over the year. Plants are approved to expand and not approved to add permanent heads, so the launch runs on overtime and the requisition waits for the next budget cycle. The Beige Book reports manufacturing "strengthened across most regions, bolstered by defense and data center demand," with skilled and technical workers "difficult to find."

What this means for hiring

Industrial engineering employment is projected to grow 12 percent over the decade and the technicians who keep automation running 18 percent, on top of a manufacturing openings count that rose 36 percent in a year. Those are not conditions in which a good engineer sits on the market for long. If a launch, a retool or a quality system upgrade is on your calendar, open the search now and decide up front whether the seat is permanent (direct placement) or tied to the program (contract at a fixed rate), because the second decision changes who you can attract and how quickly the budget clears.

Research US Labor Market Brief, September 2026

The US added 162,000 jobs in August with unemployment at 4.1 percent, manufacturing openings up 36 percent to 580,000 and only 0.95 unemployed people per opening, which is why an engineering search takes longer than it used to.

Should we hire the engineer direct or bring one in on contract?

It depends on whether the need outlives the program. If the seat is permanent, direct placement is usually the better value. If the need is a launch, a retool or a quality system upgrade with an end in sight, a contract engineer at a fixed rate is easier to budget and carries no severance exposure. Many clients start on contract and convert. We will lay out both numbers in the quote.

How long does an engineering search take?

Longer than a production order and shorter than doing it yourself. The timeline depends on the specialty, the location, the pay range and how quickly your team can interview. We give you a realistic timeline in the quote rather than a promise we cannot keep, and we tell you early if the range will not attract the person you described.

What does direct placement cost?

Do you recruit engineers outside manufacturing?

Do you recruit nationwide?

Yes. C3 Workforce is a nationwide staffing and recruiting company headquartered in Livonia, Michigan, active in multiple markets across the country and doing business in all 50 states. Engineering searches run wherever the plant is.

We need someone for the robots. Is that a controls engineer or a controls technician?

Usually both, and the mistake is hiring one and expecting the other. The engineer designs, programs and commissions the system: new cells, safety circuits, integration, changes to logic. The technician keeps it running on every shift: fault finding, robot recovery, drive swaps, preventive maintenance. If your automation is installed and the problem is downtime on second shift, you need technicians. If you are adding a cell or changing the process, you need an engineer, at least for the program. Tell us what is breaking and when, and we will tell you which seat, or both, before you write the requisition.

How do you technically screen an engineer you are not qualified to interview?

Our recruiters came up through plants, so the first screen is a real conversation about real systems: which PLC platforms they programmed from a blank project, which OEM or supplier environments they worked in, a launch or a commissioning they can walk through step by step, and a fault or a failure they owned. We check those stories with references who worked beside them. Then your engineers do the deep technical interview. Our job is to make sure everyone who reaches your calendar is worth the hour, not to replace your technical judgment.

Will you tell us if our salary range is too low?

Yes, early and with data. We bring national BLS figures and what we are seeing in comparable searches to the intake call, and if the range will not attract the person you described we say so before the search starts rather than after eight weeks of silence. Sometimes the answer is to adjust the range. Sometimes it is to adjust the job: a contract engineer for the launch instead of a permanent hire, or a strong technician plus a part time engineering consultant instead of one unicorn.

Can a contract engineer travel to a launch site or work across several plants?

Yes. Many of the engineers we place on contract are launch specialists who expect to be at a customer site, an integrator's floor or a second plant for weeks at a time. Travel expectations, per diem and who pays for it are set in the quote so there is no argument later. If the role needs someone who lives near the plant, say so at intake and we recruit locally or discuss relocation for a direct hire.

We are not in a major metro. Can you find engineers for a plant in a small town?

Yes, and it changes the approach. In a small labor market we recruit from the region and from people with a reason to move there, we lean harder on contract engineers who travel, and we are honest about how the range compares to what the nearest city pays. Plants outside big metros fill engineering seats every year. They do it by starting earlier and by hiring a recruiter who works the search instead of waiting for applicants.

What does the intake call cover?

The program and its timeline, the systems and equipment, the environment (union or not, shifts, travel), the reporting line, the range, direct or contract, and what went wrong with the last hire or the last search.
